A Guide to Preparing for Your Maternity Photo Session

It doesn’t matter whether you’re pregnant for the first time or the fifteenth time – it’s a life changing experience and it’s the beginning of your new baby’s story. You deserve to memorialize this time of your life in the most special way: with a custom fine art maternity photo shoot. In the months ahead, everything will be about your baby, so this is an opportunity to focus on you, Momma, and to make you feel like the beautiful goddess you are.

Once you’ve chosen a skilled maternity photographer with an artistic style you love, how can you make sure you have the best possible maternity photo session and a gallery of amazing portraits to enjoy? It all comes down to preparation. Follow the tips below for a smoother, more successful maternity session.

How to Prepare for Your Maternity Photo Session

• Make sure your hair is completely dry and ready to be worked on when you arrive. That means that if you have extremely frizzy hair, it needs to be somewhat smoothed before your appointment, and if your hair is thick, there cannot be any moisture left in the hair otherwise it won’t curl. For makeup, please have a clean face without any heavy face cream (light moisturizer is okay). Make sure you have removed all leftover makeup from the night before.

• If you have a look you love for your hair or makeup, feel free to have inspiration photos available to review with your stylist at the beginning of your appointment. As you’re looking for inspo, it’s important to remember to look for photos of hairstyles that mimic your hair color and texture (i.e., if you have dark brown hair, do not look for blonde hairstyles, etc.). Remember as well that your hair’s color and texture and your bone structure will never be exactly the same as the person’s in the photo, so your hair and makeup may look slightly different to accentuate your best features.

• Do whatever preparation you need to do to ensure that you are exactly on time for your appointment (or, better yet, a few minutes early). Because your maternity photo session includes professional hair and makeup services, we book a professional stylist specifically for you. If you’re more than 15 minutes late or if you need to reschedule
your photo shoot, we’ll need to pay for the stylist’s time, so you will be charged an additional $65 rebooking fee.

• Be confident! You, mom-to-be, are performing a miracle within your body, and you’re gorgeous. This session is all about highlighting the beauty and femininity of this time in your life. We know you may be feeling self-conscious about your body because it’s changing by the day, but trust us, you’re a bombshell and we’ll bring that out in your portraits, so have fun and feel amazing!

• The right undies are vital, so make sure you bring these essentials:
o Nude strapless bra that matches your skin tone as closely as possible
o Nude thong
o Black strapless bra
o As a side note, please avoid wearing a sports bra.

• Wear sandals to your session. Not only are these easy on swollen pregnancy feet but they’re easy to step into and out of for each scene in your session.

• Be open and honest. You and our pros are a team with the same goal: to get the most stunning maternity portraits you can imagine and celebrate this amazing time in your life. Before your session while we’re planning all the details as well as during your session, don’t hold back – talk to us, because we’re here to help.
